A lot of stuckness is just a missing instruction. If your move under stress is to ask, you're converting fog into something you can actually do — even when it gets read as neediness.

A surprising amount of being stuck isn't a hard problem. It's a missing sentence nobody bothered to say out loud.

Two people get the same vague brief: 'Can you take a look at the Q3 thing and tidy it up.' One of them stares at it for an hour, starts and deletes three versions, and ends the morning further behind. The other types one message: 'Quick check — what does done look like here, and which part matters most?'

Five minutes later the second one is moving. The first one is still guessing. The only difference was a question.

Stuckness is often just a missing instruction

When it isn't clear what's wanted, you don't guess and you don't stall. You ask. It's an underrated move, because we tend to treat not-knowing as a personal failing rather than what it usually is — a sentence somebody forgot to say.

A lot of stuckness is exactly that gap. Not a hard problem, not a skill you're missing. Just a piece of information sitting in someone else's head.

Why it gets misread

Here's the strange part. The very move that's most efficient — ask, get the answer, move — often gets read as neediness. As if the person with all the questions must be the one who can't cope.

It's usually the reverse. Asking, when there's a real gap and the answer unlocks action, is agency, not dependency. You're not leaning on someone; you're refusing to waste an afternoon mining fog for an instruction that one sentence would have handed you.

The person silently guessing looks more self-sufficient. They're often just stuck more politely.

The better first move

Not every question is equal, though. The ones that unlock action ask for three things: the success criteria, the priority order, and the first move. 'What does done look like, what matters most, and where should I start.'

That's the difference between a question that converts and a question that stalls. 'I'm not sure about any of this' invites a shrug. 'Is the deck or the data the priority?' gets you an answer you can act on in the next minute.

Where the strength tips

There's an edge here too. If the asking keeps going after the answer's already clear, it stops being clarification and slides toward checking — re-confirming things you already know, just to soothe the doubt rather than to unlock the work.

The tell is simple: a clarifying question ends in action. A checking question ends in another question.
